My name’s Audrey, and I am so excited to participate in Pitch Wars this year. I am applying with That Bright Beautiful World, a story about a group of teens venturing out of their bunker and into the radioactive desert to find the supplies they need to save their families. It’s a near-fetched, near-future story that would appeal to fans of Kass Morgan’s The 100 series and fans of the expansive narrative style of Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows series.
In a mentor, I’m looking for someone who knows what I’m trying to do with my story better than I do. I want someone who is brutally honest with feedback, who reads for details, who sees connections I never even thought to make. I want someone who is familiar with the YA market and who has a vision for where my book would fit on the shelves. I would love to work with a mentor who enjoys multiple points of view.
While not all of these themes don’t appear in the story, I thought it would be important to note that I write #ownvoices about the following topics.
- growing up in a working-class household
- sibling of someone with cognitive disabilities
- mentally ill parents
- depression and anxiety
Some of my favorite books:
- Feed/ M. T. Anderson
- Graffiti Moon/ Cath Crowley
- Pretties/ Scott Westerfeld
- Delirium/ Lauren Oliver
- Wintergirls/ Laurie Halse Anderson
- Dread Nation/ Justina Ireland
- Star Girl/ Jerry Spinelli
- Lock picking
- Learning Japanese
